Originally built for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, CPR 1278 was purchased by F. Nelson Blount in May 1965. She was renumbered 127 when she was place in service on Blount's Monadnock, Steamtown & Northern. Blount had three of these 1200-series CPR locos, 1246, 1278 and 1293. He planned to renumber them as 124, 127 and 129, as they were placed into service on the MS&N. Only 1278 was renumbered, carrying 127 from 1966 to 1973.
From 1970 to 1971 she was leased to the Cadillac & Lake City Railroad in Michigan. After this service she was pulled out of service for flues and running gear work. She returned to Steamtown in Bellows Falls and was changed back to 1278. After being moved to Steamtown in Scranton, PA she was traded to the Gettysburg Railroad for their CN 2-8-2 No. 3254. Gettysburg returned 1278 to service and operated her on their tourist line.
About 7:20 p.m. on June 16, 1995, the crownsheet in the firebox of Gettysburg Passenger Services, Inc. steam locomotive 1278 failed while the locomotive was pulling a six-car excursion train near Gardners, PA. The failure resulted in an instantaneous release (explosion) of steam through the firebox door and into the locomotive cab, seriously burning the engineer and the two firemen.
Jerry Jacobson purchased the locomotive at auction in 1998 and it was moved to the Ohio Central Morgan Run Shops in 1999.
1278 is repairable and sits in the OHCR deadline with others awaiting her turn in the overhaul shop.
