6325 REBUILD

Pictures from the First Excursion Run
September 22, 2001
Photos taken by Ohio Central Crew Members

Ohio Central 6325 waits in the clear as the F-7 powered fully-loaded passenger train from Columbus arrives in Dennison. The 6325 will pull the train back to Columbus after a three hour lay-over for passengers in Dennison.

Train departs Dennison with the 6325 on the point on her way to Columbus.

The skies opened up beautifully for this run. It was a perfect day. Her excursion career has begun!

Here is a great shot of the 6325 going through Coshocton, OC corporate headquarters, with blue clear skies!

The 6325 puts on a great show with this High-speed run-by at Trinway.

"A Timeless Weekend..." Ohio Central #6325 reprises history on her first revenue run" by Mark C. Perri. This article gives you an insiders look at the rebuilding of the 6325 as well as the behind the scenes of the first test runs and first passenger excursion. This article was published in November 2001 issue of Railpace Magazine.

2001 Steam Season Draws to a Close at the Ohio Central Railroad written by Steam Department employee Jason Johnson. It will give you a glance of the 2001 operating Steam season for both daily and mainline excursions.

Here's a great article by John B. Corns of TRAINS Magazine. Part of this article was used in the November 2001 TRAINS Magazine, P. 88.

The first fire-up of the 6325 in more than 42 years. The well written article was authored by Mark C. Perri and was published in the June 2001 issue of Railfan and Railroad Magazine.

Below are some pictures of the work we have done in our shop on our 4-8-4 Steam Locomotive.

4-8-4 ex-GTW #6325 before we brought it into our shop
Another view of the 6325 at the Morgan Run Shop just prior to going in for a complete rebuild
Finally in the shop to begin the overhaul
A view after the boiler was sand blasted and primed (yellow and red)
A rare look inside the boiler while only half of the flues are installed
A view inside the massive firebox. Note the arch tubes are missing and there are white squares everywhere. We replaced the arch tubes and the squares are for ultrasound testing of the boiler for metal thickness.
A view of our wheel drop pit. Here we are removing the #3 wheel set. All 4 drive wheels were removed.
The wheels are heading South. We sent the drivers to Chattanooga, TN to TVRM's wheel shop. They have the most complete wheel shop in the country. All surfaces will be machined.
The Valve cages receive a truing up. Both valves were bored by our wonderful hydraulic boring bar. New rings will be installed and this should give the engine a great exhaust sound.
The boring bar is used again to fix an egg shaped drawbar hole.
A great view of the engines type "E" superheater units. All 38 of the 6325's units were built brand new. We did not have any when we purchased the engine.
A view of the 6325's Vanderbilt Tender. This photo was taken right after it was sand blasted. The Tender is now painted and is lettered Ohio Central.
Wheels arrive back from TVRM all machined and ready for installation. Grant Geist moves the wheel in position for installation
The #4 wheel set is lifted off the truck and placed in front of the Tender.
A view of the Exhaust Steam Injector located on the fireman's side of the engine. It has been completely rebuilt.
A view of the driving boxes for the #3 wheel set. They have been completely rebuilt and returned to as new specs.
Machinist Scott Czigans machines a main driving box before installation.
Jason Johnson puts the final torque on the #2 boxes prior to installation.
Jason(left) and Scott watch as the #2 wheel is lifted into place.
A view from the engineers side looking at the #2 wheel in the pit.
An overview of the loco in the shop
Bill Goslin works on the new wood in the cab.
A rare view from inside the ash pan looking back up at the newly installed grates.
Machinist Scott drills the grease holes in the new main rod brass. He will make a finish cut to the rod brass after the holes are drilled.
Two finished rod brasses. The large one is for the main side rod and the small one is for the front side rod.
A nice view of the first side rod after final machining and installation. Notice the nicely painted wheels.

A good view of the air brake upgrade. The locomotive has had its 8ET brake upgraded to a new 26NL brake.
The 6325 waiting to be pulled outside for a test fire.
The CEO of the Ohio Central Railroad, Jerry Jacobson, tosses the first match(fusee) into the firebox of the Northern in 42 years.
The fire starts to spread. Soon she will be boiling water and making steam.
The first smoke to exit the stack of the 6325 in many, many years
A side view of the locomotive while she is boiling water.

After the locomotive got up to full working pressure, 250 psi, Mr. Jacobson opened the throttle and blew out the cylinders. We removed the pistons and valves so that the steam chest could be cleaned of any rust, scale or dirt that may have gotten into the cylinders over the years.

Finished and ready to be pulled out side!
Here she comes!
